Praised as “brilliantly fresh, unexpected and exhilarating” (The Scottish Herald,) Maxwell Quartet has become one of Britain’s most acclaimed young ensembles. Renowned for their deep roots in Scotland’s folk tradition and their adventurous approach to the classical canon, they bring charisma, warmth, and a sense of discovery to everything they play.
Their Bay Chamber program embodies this connection across centuries and styles: Byrd’s Renaissance motet in Maxwell String Quartet’s own vivid arrangement, Haydn’s sparkling D Major Quartet full of wit and invention, plus the quartet’s reimagining of traditional Scottish folk dances. Together, these works highlight Maxwell’s rare gift for weaving past and present into performances that feel timeless and alive.
The ensemble appears regularly at prestigious halls including London’s Wigmore Hall, Queen’s Hall Edinburgh, and Perth Concert Hall, and tours widely across Europe. After rapturous receptions on previous visits, they return to Bay Chamber for this special Café Concert edition.
