Praised for their “profound communication” and “thoughtful choices of timbre, articulation, dynamic contrast, and balance,” this Boston-based trio has made expanding the possibilities of their combination of instruments central to its work, commissioning new music and creating arrangements that bring unexpected repertoire into the harp-trio world. Oko’s Bay Chamber program places music of our own time alongside Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine. Sam Wu’s Dolphin Songis a lament for the baiji, the Yangtze River white dolphin declared functionally extinct in 2006; Reena Esmail’s Saans brings the influence of Hindustani music into Western chamber music - the piece was created as a wedding gift for one of Esmail’s closest friends. Together with Ravel, these works reveal just how many colors and musical worlds can emerge from three string instruments with very different ways of making sound.
