Pianist Annie Antonacos, violinist Tracey Jasas-Hardel, and cellist Timothy Paek come together for a program spanning more than 160 years, from the young Brahms to two distinctive voices of the 20th and 21st centuries. All three musicians are deeply rooted in New England’s musical life; Annie and Tracey are longtime collaborators and co-founders of Portland’s 240 Strings, while Timothy is an active chamber musician and educator across the region. At its center is Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, an extraordinary work with two lives. Brahms wrote it in 1854, when he was just twenty, then returned to it thirty-five years later and substantially rewrote it - a rare opportunity to hear the imagination of a young composer reconsidered through the experience of the older man. Alongside it, French composer Mel Bonis’sSoir et matin offers two beautifully contrasted miniatures, while Jessie Montgomery’sDuo for Violin and Cello turns the relationship between two musicians into the subject of the music itself - playful, intimate, adventurous, and, in Montgomery’s words, an “ode to friendship.”
