For more than two decades, the Poulenc Trio has championed the unusual and wonderfully expressive combination of oboe, bassoon, and piano. The New York Times has praised the ensemble’s “elegant rendition” of Piazzolla, while The Washington Post celebrated an “intriguing and beautifully played program” marked by “near effortless lightness and grace.” Their Bay Chamber program is a kaleidoscope of musical personalities. André Previn brings rhythmic wit and a touch of jazz; songs by the trio’s namesake, Francis Poulenc, are recast for instruments with all their elegance and theatrical charm intact. Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington bring American swing and syncopation into the conversation, Paquito D’Rivera adds Afro-Cuban energy, and Viet Cuong’s Explain Yourself! - commissioned by the Trio - answers Poulenc’s irreverence with a distinctly contemporary voice. Across a century of music, the same three instruments continually change character. The pleasure of the program lies in hearing how much color, humor, lyricism, and rhythmic life can emerge from this singular combination.
