JS BACH Excerpts from the Cello Suites

This is the last year of our Bach series – we’re excited to announce that next year’s festival will offer a morning series entitled MOZART IN THE MORNINGS, exploring the life and music of the classical period’s luminous genius.

As a way to close out our Bach lecture recital series, we revisit some of the works that have engaged our imaginations and emotions over the last 10 years of the series, beginning with the unaccompanied cello suites. Bach composed his six suites between 1717–23, each based on dance movements. Written while Bach was serving as Kapellmeister in Köthen, along with his other famous secular triumphs including the Brandenburg Concertos and the Well-Tempered Clavier, they are, without doubt, some of the most emotionally intense pieces in the Baroque repertoire, making the most of the emotional depth of a solo cello and using a wide range of complex playing techniques.

Our guide for the two Cello Suites sessions (Wednesday and Saturday) is Joshua Roman. He is a gifted cellist and composer, hailed for his “effortlessly expressive tone… and playful zest for exploration” (New York Times), as well as his “extraordinary technical and musical gifts" and “blend of precision and almost improvisatory freedom… that goes straight to the heart" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Zoot coffee and muffins are available before the concert.
