J.S. BACH Excerpts from The Goldberg Variations
This is the last year of our Bach series – we’re excited to announce that next year’s festival will offer a morning series entitled MOZART IN THE MORNINGS, exploring the life and music of the classical period’s luminous genius.
As a way to close out our Bach lecture recital series, we revisit some of the works that have engaged our imaginations and emotions over the last 10 years of the series. Part 3 marks the start of a new journey with Bach’s crowning keyboard achievement, the Goldberg Variations, so memorably explored in the series some years ago by pianist Simone Dinnerstein. The second session is on Sunday at 10AM, and attending both sessions is the best way to prepare for Rachel’s performance of the full work on Sunday at 1PM.
This monumental exploration of the variation form ranks as the largest single keyboard composition published in the 18th century, in which Bach displays his command not only of the popular musical styles of his day, but also of the most advanced virtuoso techniques for keyboard playing.
American pianist Rachel Breen has been described as “truly show-stopping” (Gramophone UK), having “a beautiful piano sound and original detail.”
Zoot coffee and muffins are available before the concert.
