Poiesis Quartet bring a spirit of curiosity and fearless engagement to everything they play, combining rigorous musicianship with a willingness to take risks through “brilliantly idiomatic” programming (The New York Times). They have quickly garnered attention for performances that are thoughtful and visceral, establishing a distinctive voice among a new generation of fearless chamber ensembles.
This program presents works by three living composers whose music invites us into an unpathed sonic ecosystem – musical terrain that invites discovery. Sky Macklay’s quicksilver imagination and playful, questioning energy ask what it means to arrive — or whether arrival is ever the point. Michi Wiancko’s textural exploration of ecological renewal and human resilience was co-commissioned by Bay Chamber and shines an emotional light on what it means to live in the world today - the anxieties, the hope, the resistance fatigue, and the persistence of joy. That sense of searching gives way to music that listens to presence, to memory, to the ways lives continue to resonate. In his new work, commissioned by the quartet, Jeff Scott honors figures whose courage and humanity reshaped the world in enduring ways.
Heard together, these works create a bold frontier shaped through attention and openness. The shifting sense of orientation draws us into music that resists resolution and invites us to remain within its unfolding. In this unpathed space, belonging is not given, but discovered — something that takes shape in the act of listening itself.
