Pre-Concert Talk: Unruly Sun and the Transformative Power of Gardening

MATTHEW RICKETTS, composer

MARK CAMPBELL, librettist

KEVIN FITZGERALD, conductor

ASA PEATS, landscape artist

Join us for a lively discussion with composer Matthew Ricketts and librettist Mark Campbell, the creators of Unruly Sun, Kevin Fitzgerald, the work's conductor, and Asa Peats, visionary landscape artist and designer of Bay Chamber’s new garden.

Unruly Sun is a song cycle inspired by filmmaker Derek Jarman and his memoir Modern Nature. This moving and sometimes funny work celebrates Jarman as an artist and a person living with AIDS—and his efforts to create a garden at Prospect Cottage, a fisherman’s cabin on the unforgiving southern coast of England. Composer Matthew Ricketts and librettist Mark Campbell (whose operas have received both a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award) will be joined conductor Kevin Fitzgerald and Asa Peats to discuss the transformative power of gardening— in the beautiful new garden Asa has designed for Bay Chamber.

An engaging and fun conversation with four highly creative artists, this added talk offers the best way to gain a deeper appreciation for the performance of Unruly Sun on Thursday August 15, as well as an opportunity to hear about Bay Chamber’s Garden from one of Maine’s most visionary landscape designers.

Iced tea and scones provided!

FREE – there will be a donation basket if you’d like to offer support for Bay Chamber’s performance programs.
