Step into the candlelit intimacy of Hammer Hall for a trip back to the age of Handel and Purcell, to the very peak of English Baroque. Soprano Nola Richardson, praised for having a voice for which Handel might have designed the music, sings arias from the composer’s Aminta e Fillide and Partenope, his first comic opera. Nola brings her sublime voice to arias from Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, an opera written in the spirit of Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Instrumental works frame the program, including pieces from Purcell’s Abdelazer Suite alongside dazzling Handel pieces. The Verona Quartet, known for its bold, interpretive strength, is joined by renowned composer and double bassist Evan Premo as well as esteemed harpsichordist and Baroque music scholar John McKean.
