Set along Camden Harbor at the beautifully reimagined American Boathouse, this midday concert brings together festival artists Viano Quartet, Catherine Gregory, James Austin Smith, Simone Porter, Celia Hatton and Arlen Hlusko for a program shaped by water—its movement, its stillness, and its changing light.
The concert includes the shifting currents of Salina Fisher’s Mata-Au, inspired by the Clutha River in New Zealand, and Ennio Morricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission, which seems to drift like mist over water. Samuel Barber described the Adagio from his Quartet, played in this concert by the Viano Quartet as a "river gaining momentum on its way to the sea." In the 1930s, Barber was among a group of young artists who spent formative summers in Camden and Rockport.
