Performers

BALOURDET QUARTET ANGELA BAE & JUSTIN DEFILIPPIS, violin BENJAMIN ZANNONI, viola RUSSELL HOUSTON, cello CELIA HATTON, viola ARLEN HLUSKO, cello

The Balourdet Quartet, acclaimed for its vibrant energy and emotional depth and described as “an ensemble unafraid to show its personality” (The Strad), are joined by Principal Viola of Sphinx Virtuosi, Celia Hatton and internationally renowned cellist Arlen Hlusko, hailed for her “absorbing originality” (Gramophone). Their program centers on two works written in Italy, each reflecting a very different relationship to place, memory, and form.

Puccini’s single movement tribute was written in 1890 as a memorial to the Duke of Savoy. It draws on the composer’s operatic instinct for vocal melodic line. Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir, written as a jubilant "thank you" to the city that hosted him, is a vibrant collision of cultures. It captures the joy of discovering a new home while weaving in the folk melodies of his native Russia.

Experience a luscious program exploring the duality of home—the comfort of where we began and the excitement of where we belong.
