J.S. BACH Excerpts from The Cello Suites
This is the last year of our Bach series – we’re excited to announce that next year’s festival will offer a morning series entitled MOZART IN THE MORNINGS, exploring the life and music of the classical period’s luminous genius.
As a way to close out our Bach lecture recital series, we revist some of the works that have engaged our imaginations and emotions over the last 10 years of the series. Part 4 coninues our exploration of the unaccompanied cello suites. The suites were not widely known before the early 20th century. It was Pablo Casals who first began to popularize the suites, after discovering an edition by Friedrich Grützmacher in a thrift shop in Barcelona in 1889 when he was 13. Although Casals performed the suites publicly, it was not until 1936, when he was 60 years old, that he agreed to record these iconic works.
Our guide for the two Cello Suites sessions is Joshua Roman, a gifted cellist and composer who “combines the expressive control of Casals with the creative individuality and virtuoso flair of Hendrix himself.” (Gramophone)
