Mozart in the Morning, Part 4: Between Solitude and Conversation

  • Hammer Hall 5 Mountain Street Camden, ME 04843 United States (map)

Performers

DAVID KAPLAN, piano JANICE CARISSA, piano SIMONE PORTER, violin CELIA HATTON, viola ARLEN HLUSKO, cello CATHERINE GREGORY, flute
JAMES AUSTIN SMITH, host

Pianists David Kaplan and Janice Carissa are joined by Simone Porter, Celia Hatton, and Arlen Hlusko as well as flutist Catherine Gregory and our series host, oboist James Austin Smith for a program that places two of Mozart’s distinctive chamber works side by side, each shaped by a very different relationship to sound and ensemble.

The Adagio and Rondo was originally written for glass armonica, an instrument known for its ethereal, sustained tone. Heard on piano in this session, along with winds and strings, the music retains that quality. The G Minor Piano Quartet, one of only two works Mozart wrote in the genre, was considered unusually demanding at the time, both technically and musically. Heard together, these pieces reveal two ways of sustaining intensity: one through stillness and resonance, the other through momentum and structural drive.

These works span the final decade of Mozart’s life, from the ambitious, public-facing energy of his Vienna years to the more intimate, highly specific sound world of his final compositions.
