Performers

STEFAN JACKIW, violin NICHOLAS CANELLAKIS, cello MICHAEL STEPHEN BROWN, piano

Violinist Stefan Jackiw, cellist Nicholas Canellakis, and pianist Michael Stephen Brown come together for an evening devoted to the piano trio — one of chamber music’s most exhilarating forms of musical conversation.

Haydn’s celebrated trio sparkles with humor and flair. Written during Haydn’s London years, this is music shared among friends in intimate settings. Two works by Michael follow, offering a glimpse into the imagination of a composer-performer whose music blends sensitivity with flashes of mercurial brilliance.

The evening culminates in Mendelssohn’s magnificent piano trio. Robert Schumann famously called it “the master trio of our time,” praising its soaring melodies and dazzling interplay. Mendelssohn grew up in a household where chamber music flourished in the family’s Sunday musicales — gatherings where musicians, artists, and thinkers shared music together. This repertoire, too, was born not only for the concert hall, but for the warmth and immediacy of music made among friends.
