Toomai String Quintet brings together acclaimed artists whose work spans leading chamber music series and innovative cross-genre collaborations. Known for their ability to move between classical repertoire and music shaped by jazz, improvisation, and global traditions, these exceptional musicians create performances that are technically refined and vividly alive. The program begins with Albéniz’s evocative musical portrait of the port of Cádiz in Spain — a place of arrival, departure, and encounter. The music that follows spans a series of cultural landscapes shaped by movement and exchange. At its center stands Dvořák’s ravishing quintet, music of warmth and expansive character. Dvořák inscribed the piece “To my nation,” a reflection on identity and belonging that resonates throughout the program — where ideas of home are shaped as much by distance as by place. The evening concludes with a set of works drawn from Latin American and Afro-Caribbean traditions, reimagined by inventive bassist and group leader Andrew Roitstein. From the dance-driven energy of Tito Puente to the richly layered musical language of Tania León and the wistful nostalgia of Milton Nascimento, this is music shaped by migration, memory, and cultural exchange.
