What defines the feeling of home? Is it the structure of a familiar room, the memory of a first love, or the rugged landscape of a distant shore? Banff International String Quartet Competitionwinners, the Viano Quartet - praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention,” (Boston Globe) join “dazzling” (The New York Times) oboist James Austin Smith for an intimate musical journey from the sun-drenched clarity of the Enlightenment to the folk-infused soul of the 20th century.

Haydn’s early quartet is chamber music that is elegant, conversational, and full of the youthful wit that defined a new era of musical connection. Dvořák’s deeply personal miniatures are postcards from the heart; originally written as songs of longing, these pieces radiate a nostalgic warmth, capturing the bittersweet ache of remembering one's first home and first love. Bax, though English, found his spiritual home in the wild beauty of Ireland. This lush, "Gaelic" work weaves the haunting, vocal quality of James’ oboe with the Viano's lush sound, culminating in a spirited Irish reel that celebrates the joy of finding where you truly belong.
